“Surrendered People were Burned and Beaten to Death - Sri Lanka violated International Conventions” – AHRC
(Tamil Insight, 29 08 2008)- “The United Nations Human Rights Committee’s latest view issued in July 2008 on a communication filed by a Sri Lankan against the state of Sri Lanka holds the state to have violated article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) which guarantees the right against arbitrary deprivation of life and article 7 which guarantees freedom against torture. The view further holds the state liable for the failure to provide an adequate remedy against these violations thus, also violating article 2 (3) of the ICCPR.” the Asian Human Rights Commission said yesterday in a Statement. “ … On 7.9.89, 20 suspects surrendered, on 17.9.89, 13 suspects surrendered and on 2.10.89, 23 suspects were surrendered by the monk to the military. During that time the JVP leader of Puttalam, Santha, met the monk and surrendered. When he surrendered the authorities told him that he had not done anything wrong. But later the monk found him in the camp at Anamaduwa with barb wire tied about his ears, hands and feet. Later he learned that he had been taken away by a captain. In another case a young man who had surrendered from Kattukachhi was taken to Anamaduwa Camp. He was removed by a captain and burned together with another young man, a bank employee in a neighbouring house near a place where a bomb attack had been carried out against military vehicles. As this captain used the monk’s vehicle for this purpose people suspected the monk of being involved. The monk gives a long list of the names of officers who were in the camps in the area. “The monk was given a van for his work with protection by armed soldiers. On one occasion due to a weapons misfire by one of those soldiers he was injured. At Anamaduwa camp he saw a 60-year-old man being hung in a gunny bag who was beaten to death while he was hanging in the bag. On another day a young man was beaten to death. He later took the young man’s body to the hospital. The monk spent most of his time at the camp at Puttalam” the statement said. 20 SLA killed, 32 wounded, 3 bodies recovered in Thu'nukkaay - LTTE
[TamilNet, Saturday, 30 August 2008, 16:34 GMT] Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) confronted Sri Lanka Army (SLA) that attempted to advance towards Aalangku'lam in Thu'nukkaay division of Mullaiththeevu district from 9:40 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. Saturday. LTTE fighters have seized 7 T-56 automatic rifles and recovered 3 dead bodies of SLA soldiers after heavy fighting. The Tigers claimed that at least 20 SLA soldiers were killed and more than 32 wounded in the clashes. The attempt to advance through several fronts towards Aalangku'lam was repulsed after stiff resistance, the Tigers said. Several ammunitions were also seized by the Tigers. The LTTE officials didn't provide casualty details on their side. Meanwhile, heavy shelling by the SLA was reported in Akkaraayan, Vannearikku'lam, Aanaivizhunthaan and Skanthapuram villages on Saturday. http://www.tamilnet.com/art.html... |

Yesterday’s bomb not LTTE’s work
EXPLOSIVE EXPERT SAYS "SMALL BOMB" AIMED AT GETTING PAVEMENT CLEARED? By Staff reporters An explosive expert who investigated yesterday’s Pettah bomb, cast doubts as to whether it was in fact the work of the LTTE as it was a time bomb weighing just 100 grammes. The explosion occurred at Colombo’s busiest commercial hub in the midst of the afternoon traffic rush. At least 44 people have been injured with no deaths being reported so far. The time bomb had been placed underneath a makeshift shelter of a watch repair shop along the pavement facing Olcott Mawatha in the Pettah. “The explosive expert doubted whether this attack was an attempt to clear the pavement of temporary shops -- or whether it was the work of subversive elements. But he confirmed that the LTTE would not explode a bomb of such a small magnitude. When asked as to how he came to such a conclusion , he said, “the way the bomb was placed and elements used (2mm pellets) it was certainly not meant to kill people but to injure and cause a certain amount of confusion .”. He said that in the past as far as the LTTE was concerned it caused untold damage and a severe loss of life by using a minmum of at least a kilogram of explosives.and pellets that were of 5mm breadth in order to cause maximum damage.. The time bomb said to be of an IED (improvised Explosive Device) exploded around 12:15 pm at the shop facing the main junction opposite the Bo Tree. Among the 44 injured, were four women and two children all of whom were immediately rushed to the Colombo National Hospital. Dr Hector Weerasinghe, director of the National Hospital, confirmed the casualties in the attack and said “Most of them were suffering from minor shrapnel wounds for which they are being treated .” However, some of the injured were later taken in for surgery, but none of them are life threatening he added. Military and police personnel at the scene of the incident said that it had been a parcel bomb placed at the watch repair shop that went off. An eye witness F. Suresh who also works at a watch repair stall opposite the junction said that they had witnessed nothing suspect during the hours before, and only heard the sound of the blast. “Vehicles were moving as there was not much traffic,” he said. “We looked up at the shop in front of us from which the sound of the huge blast came.” Suresh added that the injured were rushed in three-wheelers to the nearby hospital. Meanwhile, 44 injured civilians were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. Lakshman Lal is among the injured and fears for the life of his daughter who was also caught in the blast. http://www.lakbimanews.lk/news/laknew1.htm |
